A Picture of Metzer Farms!

I have always wanted a picture drawn of our farm as I am sure many of you would like to see our layout.  Pictures on our website and blog may show parts of the farm, but not the total layout.

My niece is an artist and I asked her to draw the farm.  Below is her wonderful depiction of our farm.  Those of us that work and live here love her detail.  Notice the windswept trees from our daily wind.  See the sheep we have to control the grass?  Behind the farm are the fields of the fertile Salinas Valley - supplying the salads for the nation. Looks like the van is being loaded with eggs or birds to be shipped out!  Do you find the picnic table used for breaks on nice days?

Unfortunately we felt it necessary to remove this special drawing of our farm as it was recently displayed on the blog of a animal rights terrorism group as an example of a farm that would be "a prime target" for their organization since we sell animals.  This is the same organization that pridefully admitted burning 14 trucks at a California feed lot in January of 2012.

Although we have nothing to hide and pride ourselves in our animal care, we do not want to provide a map of our farm to someone that may do harm to us or the animals under our care.

Please keep this in mind when you are asked for a donation to support an animal rights organization or to vote for the legislation they sponsor.

1 - Hatchery
2 - Greenhouse (holding many of our small breeder duck flocks)
3 - Brooder Room (for small numbers of birds)
4 - Building 1 (duck breeders)
5 - Shavings and Hay Bunkers
6 - Building 2 (duck breeders)
7 - Building 3 (duck breeders)
8 - South Goose Breeder Pens
9 - Tool/Maintenance Shed
10 - Mallard Pens
11 - North Goose Breeder Pens
12 - Red Barn (brooder building for large flocks)
13 - Our Home (for our brood)

If you would like to know more about Metzer Farms and the birds we sell, please visit our website.

  1. If Metzger kept the animals to PREVENT them from ending up on a plate, under a scalpel, or in exchange for money, the groups you seem to fear would applaud your endeavors.

    1. You have every right to your opinion. Too bad you use yours ignorantly. Metzer Farms treats their birds very humanely and runs a well respected business. You don't want to eat animal products, knock yourself out. My own son doesn't eat animal products, and no longer will even buy leather. BUT you have no right to condemn those of us with other opinions nor to support agencies that sponsor terrorism. Convince other people not to buy animal products and respect us.

  2. its impossible to feel sorry for people who receive their blood money income from exploiting animals. it was probably just as difficult for the abolitionists to feel sorry for the slave owners who were" just trying to make a living" by enslaving others. just because you can do it, or the "law" ( it was legal to own/sell/beat slaves) says its ok, doesn't mean it is. there are people, growing in numbers, who are just plain sick and tired of being told/sold that speciesm is alright.

    1. So you make no distinction between slaves (people) and pet ducks? Wow.

    2. Wow. Metzer farm and its blood money and slaves. That’s funny. You are so out there that your argument is just funny.
This is about as funny as the PETA protest I saw once. Half naked people on the street simulating porn and 3 guys in lawn chairs watching them eating beef jerky.
You forgot that they force prostitution since they have males locked in cages with female animals. I guess they also in the mob (since they have blood money) and responsible for crime in their state or at least area.
Thank GOD I live in a place where I don’t have to hear this every day. But with all this debate, I have gotten hungry. I guess I’m going down to the local steakhouse and order me a side of roasted duck and a bucket of KFC.

    3. Apparently all animals are exploited if raised for consumer ingestion. Therefore, please stop purchasing anything that has leather or wool in it's composition. Please stop eating farm raised vegetables as they are fertilized with animal waste products and for sure quit bitching at farmers for making food and a living. You are so out of line!

    5. It has always amazed me when someone believes it is okay to kill people but not okay to eat a duck. I am certain that God says it's the other way around and I have no problem using my name. Agenda 21 anyone?

    6. i Thank my God in heaven that we live in a free country and that we can learn and make a product to sell that people want and can profit and make a living and not be slaves to the government and to people who have absolutely no sense whatsover. be glad you are not part of nature and trying to survive on things like fallen nuts and dried berries because heaven forbit you pick one off the plant or even kill a plant to eat. they have feelings too you know. and a sense of humor when i go to pull them from my garden, they laugh at me and say "i'll be back" For your information, people who raise animals in a business take care of them. if they don't then they have a big problem on their hands. so that is why they clean, and keep the areas nice and feed good feed. if these birds were in the wild, they would get eaten and ripped apart by animals to eat them. a viscious death. maybe you should find out how to protest the way nature treats animals and take care of that because there are many starving animals who don't have food, shelter and vet care that need it. i have a possum that needs to be relocated that is eating my cat food. God Bless America and the people who have a lick of sense. Thank you Metzer farms for your business. it provides a great service to those who need it.

  3. Okay, so let me get this straight – if only Metzer Farms (and everyone who eats meat, buys pet ducks, or whatever else it is you object to) would simply do what you say, all would be right with the world? Who the heck are you to decide?

I find it deeply offensive that you would defend the threats made against Metzer Farms.

Do you seriously think it’s okay to incite violence against someone you don’t even know, because you perceive that they are doing something you don’t like? Sorry, got to disagree with you there.

Word of the day: Sanctimonious. Look it up.

Being a vegetarian (or a vegan) doesn’t make you morally superior in any way. It doesn’t even make you more of an animal lover than most of the people buying ducklings from this farm. It’s a diet that you have chosen, nothing more. If it works for you, great; if it doesn’t, eat something else. But check the small print – just because you don’t eat meat, you don’t actually get a special set of rules that place you above other people. You have no right to threaten or harm anyone else just because they don’t agree with you or they don’t toe your mark.

I assure you violence is not an acceptable path to anything good. Violence only begets more violence. You want to do something good for animals? Find an animal in your world and be kind to him or her. Maybe volunteer at your local shelter, or raise some money for animals that don’t have enough food to eat. Or go big – raise a lot of money and open your own nature preserve. Lots of ways to do something positive for the animals that share this planet... Blowing up or otherwise destroying personal property, making threats, and inciting people to do harm are not on the list.

    1. Hello Anonymous - It is not a "whatever"... The subjects in question are "who's". They are sentient beings - Not "things" as you are attempting to make them out to be.

As far as violence is concerned I implore you to look within as it is the animal industries that as "standard practice" inflict unspeakable "violence" against innocent others. These ducks, goats, rabbits, cows, pigs and so on are totally defenseless against the force they endure... All in the name of profit I might add.

And of course there are ethics that reflect in one's consumer choices! You aren't suggesting that there is no difference in purchasing slave-trade cocoa or free-trade - Are you? Likewise a plant based diet reduces suffering as much as possible. Being vegan does not eliminate all harm done to nonhumans but it certainly is the first, critical starting point.

The one thing we do agree on is that violence begets violence. "As long as there are slaughterhouses there will be battlefields." Tolstoy

Finally... A genuine animal "lover" does not exchange money to "own" their lives. They do not treat other beings like "property". They do not support institutions that manipulate and control their lives. They don't pay companies to "breed" birds for eggs or "flesh". An honest animal "lover" respects the lives of others regardless of what material benefit some wish to exploit them for.

    2. Dear Anonymous number 1, I think it is the lack of protien in their diets that make them as bat shit as they are. PETAKILLSANIMALS go to THAT web site and check it out. 98% of all the animals in their care have been put down. HSUS has the best paid retiree's in the USA. It is all about the nutcases these days. There is absolutely no justification for putting down every single dog that PETA's minions/vets came in contact with during Katrina, and no justification for maligning a family farm because you "don't like it" Exactly WHERE will you be getting your "fruits and nuts" from if you run family farmers out of business??? PETA = DEAD DOGS = NUTCASES

    3. The Nazis humanized animals & dehumanized people ! That is how they justified the killing of so many people , people they said were no longer of value to the government or its agencies . The animal rights movement is an extension of the Nazi movement . They deem it OK to kill people to save animals.

  4. It is not ok to take advantage of sentient beings. These animals have all rights to live their lives free from human consumption and torture - the money you make is blood money

    1. Don't be silly. Lots of animals eat other sentient animals. In that respect why should humans be any different? Animals have neither rights or responsibilities. These concepts are entirely human constructs. Humans may have a responsibility to treat animals well but the farm hosting this site clearly does, otherwise no one would buy their stock.

  5. Agreed!!! There is NO distinction between humans and animals cruelty and slavery, when it comes to sentient beings. This is the manipulated statement brain washed by meat etc industry, and many ritualistic religions, to consider humans above animals , therefore ( not sure what's the point of the consequence) exploit enslave torture use and abuse them. Its the same to say we can enslave and exploit Dawn syndrome children or babies or slow minded people just because are not so smart .Animals need to be discovered and loved to get the entire beautiful rich world of their expressions and intelligence. One day everyone will wake up to the amazing connection to animals as companions, and feel the tremendous horror of big time torture and abuse to them 50 billions land animals a year only in USA slaughtered for human consumption: Isnt shocking!!!? IS IT WRIGHT??????

    1. That's totally crazy. Regardless of there being a distinction between humans and animals (this point is open to debate, maybe), there is certainly a zoological history that says homo-sapiens eat animal flesh. That's been going on for 100,000 years of human history and countless millions of primate evolution.

Yes, there is a difference between the hunting/scavenging history of humans during pre-civilization, and factory farms, but that distinction should be nuanced, not line in the sand. Humans evolved the animals around them to become dependent on human interaction, even manipulation. I'm not big on the "god made it for man" argument, but I'd say the "man made it for man" argument lends quite a bit of rational to the belief that humans have a right to eat animal flesh. If you watch plants in time lapse, their movements look very alive, and arguably sentient, they grow towards sources of food, around obstacles, etc. What would happen if a group came around saying that eating plant matter is akin to slavery, wouldn't you consider them crazy?

Like it or not, these animals wouldn't survive in the wild... most domesticated ducks can't even fly to escape predators.

Plus, the only objective argument you make in your comment is wrong, it was roughly 10 billion land animals, and they were tasty. http://animalrights.about.com/od/animalrights101/tp/How-Many-Animals-Are-Killed.htm

    2. The day you teach a bear, wolf, or most other animals to stop eating "flesh". I'll stop.

Eating meat has been around since the start of man. It will be around long after you and until the last man is alive.

    3. Ethic Vegan, it's Down Syndrome, and your 'WRIGHT??????' should be 'RIGHT??????' Some of my family eats meat, I don't for health reasons. I don't belittle them or criticize them because they do. That would make me judgemental. Just because someone is vegan or vegetarian doesn't make them a better person. It might make them a healthier person or a thinner person if they eat a healthy vegan diet. That's all. Plain and simple.

    4. What is more shocking is your lack of ability to spell and overwhelmingly poor grammar. Where the hell did you go to school and why don't you go back there so you can LEARN enough to realize how ridiculous your tirade sounds to sane, educated people.

FYI You wouldn't be able to use the computer you were on to type that tirade if your ancestors hadn't eaten meat. It was the increase in Protein in their diets that allowed the brain to grow and expand to handle more complex tasks and thoughts.

Chew on that for a while.

    1. I have to be a smart*** here..... My family does have a way to defend themselves, guns. The same guns we use to hunt with to feed ourselves. Also, the same guns we protect our livestock with by killing predators that would otherwise tear our beloved animals limb from limb and eat them alive! And don't even say "why do you save them from predators if you are just going to slaughter them for your food?" because we don't eat our livestock they are pets or show animals not for meat production.
      You activists are nuts!

  7. I ordered these animals for companion pets. /they are free range and there are no males. I cherish the eggs I get from them everyday so I do not patronize egg sellers that do not treat their animals humanely. I fail to comprehend your vendetta against Metzer farms. Surely there are groups that are truly doing something wrong that you can condemn. Not a simple family farm. Perhaps you can target the local animal shelters.

  9. I'm not going to order ducklings to eat them as Anonymous said up there, I'm going to order them as pet's, but a lot of people take good care of them, and there is probably very rarely abuse to the animals, so I don't see what the problem is, I mean if your not abusing the ducks, good, if you are then you obviously have no life to beat on something that can't fight back, it's as bad as a man beating on a woman, they're just proving how easy it's going to be for a man to beat on them... Well, I'm done and don't start anything please because I really don't have time to waist on little kiddie fights over the internet... Plus if you watch Metzer Farms videos you can obviously see he handles them pretty good, and when he goes near any of the ducks they don't run away from him from being frightened... I do disagree with the animal eating part but it is just my opinion. I did eat duck already and it was pretty good, but I'm not eating my ducklings that trust me, and love me... That would be betraying them. Yea, some people may disagree, but I kind of don't care what some people will say to this comment because like I said before, I don't have time to waist, and also no offence, these are just MY opinions...

  10. Please if the entire population of the earth turned vegan, there would be no animals of any species left.
The amount of land that would have to be cleared to make room for all the vegetables needed to sustain our population would destroy all natural habitats.
I'm not even going to mention what the chemicals and over processing of the soils would do to our earth

  11. I am a vegetarian and am strongly against inhumane meat products, animal abuse etc.
But SERIOUSLY? The world isn't going to stop eat meat no matter how hard you try.
And at least Metzer Farms looks after their animals better then most farms or factories.
So if you are going to go on an all out rage to try and help animals, yell at those who cut off their ducks heads (not fully) just to watch them flop and run around and they laugh and video tape it. Go off at those who beat their ducks bodies before they kill them, to make the meat 'taste' better. Go off at those who train their dogs to kill their pet chicken or duck if it gets out of the pen with the doors open.
Go off at those who DO NOT care for their animals well being and go off at those who treat animals lives as horribly as you could imagine.
DO NOT go off at those who care for their animals with love and kindness.
Metzer Farms may only be making enough money to keep supplying people with their animals, paying employees, buying feed with a little left over for them (Not accurate) so DON'T go on a rage with something you don't understand. It really does make you look like a douche.

  12. I am so sorry this has become a debate. Just learning about why and how Metzer farm came to be, it is clear they care for their animals. I have purchased Ducks from them and they are all received healthy, much faster than expected thanks to the post office, and clean, even though there were 14 of them. They are very healthy, and most of their eggs would hatch if I let them. We are planning to get two geese, and although I have checked other sources, I will be getting them from Metzer.

As For PETA. They will "save" cats from labs doing tests for human products....then euthanize them. How is this helping? They will offend my sensibilities by splashing bloody scenes to awaken my desire to love animals.....when really they repulse me with their force. I have always loved animals, but I can see they are not our equals, because I am not an idiot. The hypocrites have no issues with killing animals when it is THEM doing it. Somehow the almighty PETA killing machine is better than actually consuming what you kill? How is this logical? Seems wasteful to me.

Throwing red paint on a fur wearing person only encourages them to purchase another, causing more death to minks, or rabbits, or foxes or whatever. Do these morons use any modern conveniences? Or are they living in a shelter made of dead leaves and fallen branches? Gosh, I hope they don't kill veggies so they can eat. Rather, I hope they are eating the same fallen leaves and gaining nourishment from horse feces. After all you are what you eat, right?

PETA nuts need to be on their own island, where they can stick their heads in the sand all they want. They would not have their modern situation for living without the past atrocities towards animals. It is sad, but true that animal experimentation lead to modern medicine. They same medicine that would someday save their life. Idiots.

    GO METZER FARMS!

  16. This may not be the place to ask my question, but I have no ducks and today would be the 30-what's going on! I did everything right but the temperature in the incubator did go down once to 50 degrees. Could that be the problem? Will they hatch?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I assume you mean the eggs have been in the incubator for 30 days? 50 degrees is a problem if it was over several hours. If it was less than that, they might have survived. Did you calibrate your thermometer - make sure it was accurate by comparing it to another thermometer? The only ducks that take more than 28 days are Muscovy. If you are not hatching Muscovy eggs, I am not optimistic.

  17. Keep up the good work Metzer farm! I know you are good for your animals and there is nothing wrong with earning money with animals. I also raise ducks, rabbit, chickens and quails for personal use, if I didn't do that, then I had no animals and they didn't exist. Best regards from the Netherlands.
